Yesterday’s zentangle got me thinking about eyeballs and I wanted to do some practice before starting a non-doodle piece. And I was excited about my time lapse.
I decided to do this next time lapse of me experimenting with eyes. I wanted to do something kind of pop art inspired.

My first attempt was not great. The eyelashes ended up looking furry rather than realistic. But this is what happens a lot when you’re not going off a reference. That was the part of this challenge that was new – no references!
I went back and tried something else that I was happier with, and then worked on my retro hand lettering to create a fake ad for Maybelline. I still think the Great Lash Mascara is one of the best mascaras ever made. But I decided to not use the name of a real product for a fake ad.
I love the kind of comic book feel to this. I’m very happy that I decided to practice first, too.
The time lapses are tickling me too. I think I’m going to try to do more of them when I’m practicing things. It’s so fun to watch a sped up video of me playing with concepts and strategies.
I’m going to spend a lot of time working on the weird art eyeball piece that I thought of while working on the zentangle yesterday. So keep an eye out for that in the next couple of weeks!
In other news…
This weekend I’m finishing my Project Management certificate. I’ve been working on formalizing some of my hard-earned skills before I start making a jump back into the active job / client search.
It’s been an interesting certificate to work on, and once I’m done I’ll be going for my PMP certification!
As a technical news aside…
My partner Reid is doing a two-day Remix Workshop at work and he’s absolutely loving it. He told me that he thinks I would actually be really happy with some of the stuff he’s been learning in there. React did away with or changed some old web standards that I really did not think needed to be changed or removed. Apparently, Remix finds a way to modernize some of those standards.
It feels really good to be vindicated by the work and observations of others. I don’t think any codebase or stack is ever going to be perfect. And I do love React. It was just annoying to see some conventions and standards fucked with in a way that was unnecessary from a designer / dev standpoint.
I am also just so effing happy to see my partner so animated over something. He’s been struggling with depression and burnout for awhile now, and it’s just so nice to see him excited and energized about his work again.
So it looks like next week I’ll be checking out some of the Remix resources Reid has for me! I’m still working on my mental health app, and I want to see what Remix might add to the table for me.
